Gil gestured toward a door. âLetâs get you out of here. Follow me.â
He kicked into gear, moving surprisingly fast for a man his age.
Brett pulled Kinsley along with him as they followed Gil. At a side door and mudroom, Gil lifted a pack off a shelf and tossed it to Brett. âThat gear I mentioned. This is my emergency to-go bag. Already preppedfor any contingency.â
Brett and Kinsley followed Gil through the door and across an asphalt walkway to the big red hangar that looked like a barn. Unlocking the barn doors, he pulled them wide open and urged them inside.
A red and white Cessna 172 sat in the space next to a blue Piper Cherokee. Nice.
Gil gestured to the Cessna. âSheâs ready to take out. I did a preflight check a couple of hours ago and was out to take off when I was interrupted. You have blue skies and good weather. Feel free to do your own. Iâll try to hold off Jackson, but I canât guarantee he wonât barge right in here.â
âI canât thank you enough.â
âLike I said, you can thank me by staying safe and alive. Go on. Iâll put him off as long as I can.â Gil looked at Brett, respect in his eyes, and then nodded at both Brett and Kinsley, and smiled as though pleased he could be part of this covert operation.
He turned and left them in the barn.
Brett opened the planeâs door and tossed the pack in the back. He and Kinsley tossed the packs theyâd brought with them in the back as well.
Kinsley climbed into the passenger seat and buckled in, and Brett got comfortable in the captainâs chair in the cockpit. Put on his headset and handed one to Kinsley. This had worked out better than he could have imagined.
He couldnât help but smile even though they werenât out of danger yet. He turned his smile on Kinsley as he started up the plane. âLetâs get out of here.â
âAre you sure itâs a good idea to leave Gil to Jackson alone?â
âHe can handle himself, and heâs giving us a chance to escape. Lee Jackson, if thatâs his real name, has followed us and never attacked us. Whoeverâs paying him, I doubt they want the bad publicity of attacking a senior citizen vet whoâs also a gold star parent. Weâre getting out of here.â The biggest issue was timing. He would love for Jackson to be inside the house or out of the way as Brett taxied down the runway.
Brett familiarized himself with the Cessna once again, then slowly taxied out of the hangar and onto the smooth grass of the airstrip. If he ever moved to the country, he was definitely putting one of these in. Brett increased speed and prepared to lift off as soon as he could. Unfortunately, he spotted Gil and Jackson at his front door, arguing. Jackson suddenly turned and spotted the plane. He rushed toward his Subaru.
âWhat are we going to do?â
âWeâre going to get in the air and heâs not going to stop us.
